Alex Bush (they/them) is a Los Angeles–based writer, director, and producer whose work explores social structures & performance, with an eye towards the transcendent. Their filmmaking style is noted for its bold interplay of theatricality and visceral psychology.
A graduate of NYU Tisch (BFA, Theatre/Directing) and AFI Conservatory (MFA, Directing), Alex began their career in downtown theatre, developing work at Ars Nova, The PUBLIC, and Musical Theater Factory, before moving into cinema, where their voice has quickly emerged as a distinctive presence in American independent film.
Their short film THAW premiered at Tribeca Festival 2023 and went on to screen at Outfest, HollyShorts, Sidewalk, Mardi Gras, and over a dozen festivals worldwide. The project is now being expanded into a feature with support from Antigravity Academy, Unapologetic Projects, and BENDFilm Basecamp, where they were a 2025 Fellow. Alex was also selected as a filmmaker for Ari Aster & Lars Knudsen’s SQUARE PEG SOCIAL.
Across their slate, Alex develops stories that interrogate archetype, collective performance, and the boundaries between fantasy and reality. Current projects include Beware the Wolves (a dark fairy-tale fable of siblings confronting abuse), Hounds (a neo-noir set on the night of Princess Diana’s fatal crash), and Summer Wine (a psychological satire set in a Southern beach town).
They also create visuals for artists including Madeline, JVNA, Laura Galindo, & Caitlin Cobb-Vialet, and have creative directed for brands including YSL Beauty & Noor Fes. Additional producing work for HBO Max, Twitch, Disney, & Prime Video.
Alex’s work has been championed by institutions such as Tribeca, Canva, WeScreenplay, & the Eastern Oregon Film Society, and they have participated in residencies and labs including Antigravity Academy’s Screenwriters Camp & the Eastern Oregon Filmmaker’s Residency. Their award-winning screenwriting work has been supported by Nashville Film Festival (Nominee - Best Drama), Stowe Story Labs (Film Fatale Fellow, Honorable Mention), & earned them a feature on Coverfly’s Best Unrepped Writers List 2023. At AFI, they were also the recipient of the inaugural Canva Fellowship, awarded to one director each year.
Beyond their own filmmaking practices, Alex works as the Director of Strategic Partnerships for Shorts Movie Theater, a first-of-its-kind shorts-microcinema and community space opening in Brooklyn, NY spring 2026.
